After it was announced by the Obama administration that the Standish Maximum Correctional Facility could potentially hold detainees from Guantanamo Bay, Rep. Pete Hoekstra, R-Holland, has been one of the most vocal opponents of the idea.

Last month, Hoekstra -- a candidate for governor -- spoke out against housing the detainees in Standish at town hall meeting. Hoekstra denied his request to the Department of Defense to bring a delegation of Michigan officials and reporters to visit Guantanamo Bay.

In a press release, Hoekstra questioned the Obama administration's committment to transparency.

"State officials need access to information on the terrorist detainees, they need to see the facilities, and they need to be given a full assessment of known threats," Hoekstra said.

Along with Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, Hoekstra introduced the Keep Terrorists Out of America Act to affirm Congress' opposition to transferring or releasing detainees held at Guantanamo Bay to the United States, among other things.
