Democrat Boxer holds Senate seat in California

WASHINGTON | Tue Nov 2, 2010 11:09pm EDT

Nov 2 (Reuters) - California Democratic U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer won re-election on Tuesday, Fox News projected, all but ensuring that Democrats will retain control of the Senate.

Boxer, one of the more powerful liberals in the Senate, eked out the victory after a bruising fight against former Hewlett-Packard Co chief executive Carly Fiorina and with help from President Barack Obama.

Fiorina, a political novice, had been running neck-and-neck against Boxer despite California's reputation as a mostly Democratic state. Republicans made it a major priority to win the seat and invested millions of dollars into the race.

The victory for Democrats was critical as they sought to stave off a Republican bid to pick up 10 seats and win control of the Senate. (Reporting by Jeremy Pelofsky; Editing by Frances Kerry)
