Equatorial Guinea leader calls for death

LONDON (Reuters) - Equatorial Guinea President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo says an international plot to overthrow him would have resulted in a massacre and those responsible deserve death by firing squad.

In a rare interview, Obiang told the Mail on Sunday he was prepared to visit Britain if necessary to secure extradition for those accused of trying to oust him.

"I want to see them in my country, in my prisons ... If I were to be the judge, I would apply the maximum penalty -- execution by firing squad," he said.

The trial resumes in the capital Malabo on Monday of 19 men accused of involvement in an attempt to overthrow the government in the tiny oil-rich African nation.
