The first day of six-nation talks on North Korea's nuclear program has ended in Beijing, with no hint of any possible agreement.

Delegates from China, the two Koreas, Japan, Russia and the United States got together behind closed doors to try to find a peaceful resolution of the crisis over North Korea's nuclear weapons program. Diplomats said the first session was conducted in a warm and relaxed atmosphere, with none of the participants breaking any new ground with their remarks.

Russia's negotiator, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Losyukov, told the Interfax news agency that he is not very optimistic about the outcome of the talks. He called the atmosphere "somewhat fragile," but he said he thinks that some kind of agreement still is possible.
