They want to feel more righteous than their neighbor wihtout actually having to expend any energy to actually be a better human being. It relates to one of Jesus's examples of a Pharisee and a Publican. The Pharisee barfed up this self-sanctimonious prayer "Lord, I thank you that I'm not like this Publican over here etc." while the Publican beat his breast and prayed "Lord, have mercy on me a sinner." Jesus asked his audience which one went away forgiven.

The Talibangelists are simply modern legalistic Pharisees. It's a pitiful existence, if you ask me. They're all about control and power, not about bringing people closer to God or making them into better human beings. Yet another aspect of right-wing hypocrisy that drove me leftward. Going around with a chip on my shoulder and a pinecone up my ass wasn't making me a better human being. :D
