NEW YORK (AP) — Republican Nan Hayworth picked up a House seat in the lower Hudson Valley held by US. Rep. John Hall in the 19th Congressional District.

Republican Hayworth, a retired ophthalmologist, defeated two-term Hall, D-Dover. Hall was swept into office amid the Democratic wave in 2006, beating longtime Republican Rep. Sue Kelly.

Hayworth is a favorite of local tea party supporters.
