197. I was an expatriate American in France
Hey, I speak French, have married a French women, and have French family. My whole American family is Republican. Imagine my situation (freedom fries now?)

The irony is that I started life, and lived a great deal of my life as a Republican. But there is nothing similar with what I was now among these people. They have become corrupted. I voted Republican occasionally and actually think there are some reasonable ideas in some Republican circles. I have not abandoned this party (probably forever) because of their ideas but because of their behavior.

I am not ready to call these people fascists, but I have begun to wonder with this developing blindness and seeming inability for critical self analysis, would they be able to see it coming upon them should it get much closer. I no longer believe so.

Incidently, the real reason the French were against this war is quite simple. They believed, with their own history of meddling and failure intervening in the Middle East that what would happen is exactly what has happened. What I can't understand is why the British, with such a similar history and we would hope several humble pie lessons under their belts would follow Bush into this mess.
