NZ deports alleged (Israeli) secret agents

Two Israelis, who are alleged to be secret agents, have been deported from New Zealand after completing jail terms for passport fraud, Prime Minister Helen Clark says.

Ms Clark, who has called for an apology from Israel over the matter, says Uriel Zoshe Kelman and Eli Cara have left the country.

Local media report the pair was released from Auckland's Mount Eden jail early today.

"At this point there have been no approaches from the Israeli Government with respect to the actions for which the two Israelis were sentenced," Ms Clark said.

"The ball is in Israel's court."

Ms Clark says she has "no doubt" Kelman and Cara were agents when they were sentenced in June.

She has suspending high-level contacts with Israel and called off a visit by President Moshe Katsav.

The Israeli Government has never acknowledged their status.
