(Montana) Former Republican Party chairwoman: Elect Democrats

HELENA -- A former chairwoman of the Montana Republican Party is preaching an unusual message these days: Elect Democrats to the Legislature this fall.

Susan Good, 54, of Missoula, who helped fashion Republican majorities at the Legislature when heading the party in the early 1990s, said last week in a Montana Public Radio commentary those majorities have become "stagnant," overrun with ideologues and bereft of creative ideas.

Montanans should vote for Democrats in legislative races and return Republicans to the minority, so the latter can recharge their batteries, the former Great Falls legislator said.

"Believe me, it gave me no pleasure to say that," Good told the Tribune this week. "This is a real heartbreaker for me. But I believe it's the best thing for Montana -- though it may be a bitter pill for (Republicans) to swallow."

Republicans have a 29-21 majority in the Senate and a 53-47 edge in the Montana House. They've held majorities in both houses since 1995.
