BEIRUT, August 6 (Itar-Tass) -- Reactive shells were fired lat night at the former presidential palace in Ramadi west of Baghdad that now houses the headquarters of US troops,

Al Jazeera television reported with reference to onlookers that several powerful explosions hit the territory of the U.S. military compound. In retaliation, US soldiers fired at random. The results of the armed attack were not immediately known.

Earlier, fierce skirmishes were reported in the centre of Baghdad. In Falluja, two police stations that house barracks of the coalition troops were shelled from mortars. Three soldiers were wounded. A personnel armoured carrier exploded on a mine on the outskirts of Falluja.

The U.S. commandos continue the search for Saddam Hussein and his supporters in the area of Dajila forty-five kilometres north of Baghdad. Nine people have been detained, including four identified as militants of the Iraqi resistance,

A first group of newly recruited Iraqi soldiers began military training in Kirkuk on Tuesday. The recruits were brought to Kirkuk heavily guarded by U.S. commandos for fear of possible subversive acts. The number of recruits planned to be trained by the year's end and who are to make the bulk of a new national army is around 12,000. By the end of 2004, the new Iraqi army will number 40,000 servicemen."
