Who says the country is hopelessly conservative? I still cling to the (naive?) belief that Americans are generally decent, intelligent, compassionate people, i.e. liberals.
If the country did become the horrific Christian thocracy you discribed, I'd say we coup and throw over the government, revolt, fight, before we lose our country.
