They opened their borders in Aug, 1989 to allow East Germans to travel to the West. At that point, there wasn't much sense in the Wall being there anymore.

IIRC, I don't think that the destruction of the Wall was actually planned out. A few months after the Hungarian government allowed free emigration for East Germans, the GDR government, hoping to stem the tide of East German workers out of the country via Hungry, decided to open the East/West border. Once news got out, millions of Germans from each side of the border just sort of showed up in a spontaneous frenzy of hammer-swinging and destroyed the wall (and had one hell of a party, or so I've heard).
