Every postwar president before him operated on the premise that the best they could hope for is stalemate. Reagan was the first one to believe it was winnable and that scared the hell out of most of us at the time. I remember election night in 1980, damn near everyone I knew was certain that he'd start WWIII by taking a hard line with the Soviets, but he prevented it by earning their respect.
