This is a truism that needs to be repeated often because it is almost an article of faith among our mainstream media that the U.S. is engaged in bringing Democracy and Freedom to the benighted lands of the world. Nothing can be farther from the truth.

If that was our goal, we would have urged the Saudi monarchy, the Kuwaiti Emirate and the other Gulf Emirates to open up their societies to full fledged Democracy. And if that was true, we would not move heaven and earth to undermine one of the true democrats in all of Latin America, Hugo Chavez.

Democracy means that the people get to make decisions that improve their lives with the resources available in a fair and equitable manner. It also means that the moneyed classes in their societies have little say in how the resources are allocated.
