24. I think I pierced his dark armor a couple times but looking back
Edited on Tue Jun-14-05 02:17 AM by expatriot
I think I got through to him the most directly is early on in our discussion when I was talking about the "circle of compassion" in reference to my stance on animal issues.
Later on he was thinking he could use the ol' "oh you liberals don't practice what you preach" when he asked me "so where do you buy your jeans?" I told him online at nosweatapparel.com and that I only buy union made clothes now and the sweatshop clothes still in my wardrobe will be worn until threadbare(as some of them already are). I told him about the fair-trade industry, etc. and he was really sinceerly impressed, as if all of that was completely new and all the myths he had heard about us liberals being hypocrites might be untrue. He then tried to recover with "you have all these wonderful attentions, you think you can change the world by doing good." I quickly responded, "No, you see... I don't see it as me going out to change the world, I se e it as me assuming responsibility for every action I take and me being able to find happiness with those actions."

and I say this without being arrogant because god knows I had trouble holding my own at times with a real live fascist, but when he, in his near-new car dropped me off at my trailer-home after hours and hours of heated fast-moving "intellectual" debate you could tell he was squirming as he looked at my trailer... like "holy shit... you're so smart.... why do you live like _this_? Could it be that some people's primary motivation ISN'T to horde wealth and to crawl over any corpse you have to to get it?
