I planned for my 36 mpg car to last until I finish grad school, and then buy a hybrid in a few years, but Katrina took care of that plan. I cannot afford even a crappy used car now, so I've looked into alternative transport. Some electric bikes will go up to 28 mph unassisted for up to 20 miles @ 5¢ per trip. Since I was an avid cyclist, I'm sure I can get up to 40 mph by combining human power with the electric motor. When I get to school (10 miles away), I just unclip the battery and bring it with me to charge it in the class room. :)
