Mr. Crow and I tried to celebrate the Solstice by burning a Yule log in our little copper fire bowl in the back yard, and by making sweet-smelling offerings to Spirit in gratitude and for a blessed year ahead. We tried, despite our neighbor shouting "psycho" through the fence separating our yards. And, despite the fact that they called the fire department, who felt it was within their right to interrupt our ritual to inspect our fire.
This, to my family, was equivalent to my standing outside the neighbor's church during Christmas mass shouting names, then calling the fire department to report the building was on fire. And then, having the fire department enter the church to inspect how they burn the incense.
I can't help but feel that the bogus "war against Christmas" is what emboldens people to think it's reasonable to treat those of other religions so poorly. I now understand that it may be necessary for those of us with certain spiritual practices to "go underground" in Bush's America.
