The only question is what has changed in the last two weeks to cause them to run the story. My guess is that they did a sweep of some of the offices and turned up a ton and a half of spy hardware and realized that was only the tip of a very large iceberg.
FISA courts are a rubberstamp. You can bet that none of the illegal spying has been done on the powerless. It's all been done on the sort of people whose names would have raised a red flag at even a rubberstamp court.
This is the sort of thing that is done to Congressmen, judges, media, and the opposition party.
How do I know? I've been though this before. This is exactly what Nixon did.
