98. Bible Belt needs the right VP
I suspect that many of the southern states are going to swing one way or the other based on Kerry's choice of a VP. He's got zero appeal to the GOP base in that department, and they'll paint him as a "corrupt, northeastern typical politician". You know the routine. As sad as it is to say, he'll do alot better if his VP has a twang in his voice.

Clinton carried more southern states than any Democrat in recent history since the Civil Rights movement (when LBJ correctly asserted that the Democrats had just lost the south, though he was wrong about it only being lost for a single generation). He wasn't carrying the states he got based on his economic package, people. He carried them because he seemed like a local boy, and people are more inclined to vote for someone that seems similar to them in ANY region of the country.

Kerry can't pull that off in the Bible Belt, and Bush, well, he can at least put up the front. But if Kerry can get the right VP (Edwards, who I supported in the primaries, if he can swallow his hubris and come on board) to juxtapose against the humanoid-ish incarnation of evil that is Dick Cheney. . . Kerry might actually snag a few of the southern states just based on Cheney's inherent evil-ness when compared to a bright young (looking) guy like Edwards.
