Cindy Adams: Big Dog at home "in pain, immobile," friends renting videos

September 13, 2004 -- BILL Clinton's movie industry pals are lamenting, where-oh-where- have-the-happy-films gone. He's recuperating, but it's no walk in the park. He's in pain. Immobile. Friends are casting about for entertainment to give him an up, a lift, something that would make him feel better, bring a smile for those endless homebound hours. Reading won't be as relaxing as movies and the new crop is all heavy....

Clinton's house has no screening room, so he can't be provided with 16mm or 35mm prints of maybe "Sideways," which is about wine country, or "Polar Express" with Tom Hanks and kids off to the South Pole. Fear of piracy has shut down advance cassettes.

His friends' solution? Renting the oldies like Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman's "Casablanca." Something with a nice story, nice clothes and a nice feeling.

As for Hillary's solution, she's just glad to get out of that hospital where she was a prisoner. It's being able to move without the omnipresent camera crews. It's having him home....
