if I'm not looking for them.

I guess if you're from a very sheltered bubble type suburb they might stand out.

My neighborhood has a bit of graffiti, but it's at a bearable level.

I suppose if every single garage door was getting bombed every other night it would piss me off, but a little scrawl here and there on the big thoroughfarees just seems like an urban fact of life.

Maybe the OP would prefer Giuliani's newly sanitized Manhattan (and the minimum $1300 rent for a studio room there)

And I agree, there is every kind of neighborhood, even within SF (except cheap) But if you don't like SF, feel free to stay away, and make sure to tell all your friends how much it sucks here, because we need to do all we can to reduce the demand on housing to bring rents DOWN.
