First Thoughts on Miers

The Senate's duty to advise and consent must not be a leap of faith

I know there is a lot of "confirmation fatigue" after the Roberts vote, but we must remain vigilant in protecting our precious rights. My initial reaction is that we need to learn a great deal about Ms. Miers before she can be confirmed. While the Senate confirmed Judge Roberts with virtually no background information, the Senate's obligation is even greater now to exercise its independent judgment and inquire about the record and views of the latest nominee to fill O'Connor's critical swing seat.

By and large, Miers has not been a public figure. I believe the only way to be certain that she will be a fair and partial justice is for the Senate and the American people to have full and complete access to documents that will shed lights on how she will consider the critical constitutional issues facing our nation. This will be a tough, uphill struggle, but the stakes are so high, we must stick together and do our best.

Unfortunately, the largest portion of these documents are from her tenure to counsel to * and are protected by client/attorney priviledge. Miers is the perfect pick, another stroke of political genious by KKKarl Rove.
