Anyone else feel sorry for McCain?

I realize there's a wealth of opinions at DU about the man, I fall into the "admire/respect him with reservations" category. He's the only Repub I could imagine ever voting for, and Allah only knows what * is holding over him to corral his support in this farce. I was dumbfounded by his "I can't stay angry" stance about the SC 2000 smear campaign, and find myself perpetually reading between the lines of his public statements, though maybe I'm just parsing for something that doesn't exist and which I just wish did.

Still, I picture this man in a tiger cage 30 years ago and my heart hurts for him.
