Consideration 1: The donkey was chosen for the Democrats by caricaturist Thomas Nast, who was a Republican and meant it as an insult.
Consideration 2: That doesn't mean it has to be taken as an insult. Donkeys are famous for their stubbornness after all, which can be a positive trait in an age when the country is being dragged right.
Consideration 3: A lot of Democrats naturally refer to themselves as "dogs," i.e., yellow dogs, blue dogs, red dogs, Big Dogs.
Consideration 4: "Dog" can be an insult too.
Condideration 5: There is no consideration 5.
