It really depends on a person's temperament. I for one rarely ever agree outright to do anything, because I cannot assume complete control of all of the relevant factors. I just say that I'll see about it, and then later announce successful completion of whatever I'd agreed to try to do. 'Cause it would suck to break a promise.
For some people, "I'll try" is a dodge, and really means no; for others, it's an honest statement of intent.
Of course, I dunno what exactly the person who inspired this thread had agreed to "try" to do...
