13. first off, back up settings, and then clean things
try to back up your settings/files, then dump all your IE saved temporary files (you rarely need to keep them, especially if you have broadband), they take up space.

next, if you have Lavasoft's Ad Aware program (which you should have), use that to get rid of any spyware/adware.

then run your antivirus program/s (which you should have), run any checkup programs, run any 'cleanup' software, empty you trash, restart, etc.... essentially scrub your computer clean, good hygiene is important in PCs too.

9 times out of 10 (since it's really hard to help people without seriously knowing *everything* about what's going on over where you are) cleaning everything to a nice fresh state helps. and since you admit that you are a bit of a novice, most of our help is going to waste your time unless we start cleaning things up a bit to a nice state of even. because, otherwise, there could be fragments of problem data floating about (that we cannot find because we aren't there to walk you through this) -- and why work around such problems with so many variables when you can simplify the equation and do it with less variables? :D

once that's done, the program should download easily and the install wizard should be pretty simple. but if it is not, no loss, you did some major house cleaning that should have been done a while ago.

go do that and come back to us. it should work that way. (also, though there shouldn't be any separate versions of firefox for win98, double check to make sure that the windows firefox program you downloaded is win98 compatible (it should be, but i forget))
