Las Vegas: America's most irritating city? (rant)

I went to Las Vegas this weekend. I've been there before, but this trip was so annoying that I don't think I'll ever go back (by choice).

1. Whatever happened to Las Vegas being cheap? We had to spend over $100 a night just to stay at Imperial Palace! Everything else on the strip was at least DOUBLE that!

2. Service is terrible! Everywhere we went we had waiters, waitresses, bartenders, etc. who were either surly, forgetful, overworked or just plain MIA. Our favorite was the guy who just automatically tacked 18% on to our bill without saying anything ahead of time.

3. Navigating the strip should be simple, right? It's just a street with all the casinos lined up along it. No. The casinos have been allowed to fence off the sidewalks, erecting all kinds of barriers that force you to take long detours through crowds of waddling tourists, people trying to sell you timeshares, people trying to hand you pornography and piles of refuse and vomit.

4. The place just gets kind of depressing after awhile. It's a lot of eye candy for sure. But after about the first 24 hours you start to notice the human wreckage that goes along with it. Young girls trying to pick up johns, old people in trances at slot machines. Not to mention what an environmental nightmare the city is. Of course, any desert city is an environmental nightmare, mine included. But there's something about the over-the-top use of water and electricity in Vegas that makes it especially nauseating.
