NEW YORK -- A New York mom had no other choice as smoke and flames cornered her and her baby in their third-floor apartment. So she tossed her 1-month-old baby son out the window to a man below.

That man -- Felix Vazquez -- made the catch, and gave the baby mouth to mouth resuscitation, when he noticed it wasn't breathing.

The 39-year-old Vazquez is a supervisor with the city housing authority and is a former lifeguard -- he also plays catcher for a local neighborhood baseball team. But Wednesday morning he made the catch of his career -- saving the life of baby Eric Guzman.

The mom -- 30-year-old Tracinda Foxe was unable to get out of the window because of the window guards. City firefighters were able to get to her apartment and get her outside. Both the baby and mom were treated at Jacobi Hospital and released.

Fire officials said the fire began around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday in the kitchen of the apartment in the Governeur Morris Houses. The fire damaged much of the apartment.
