I can only guess that the reference to shoes being purple mean the grape hyacinths that grow so close to the ground and are the early flowers of spring, what we in New England look for eagerly to find the end of winter. The poet had such a difficult time in winter (don't we all in New England?)and she wrote about it. I can certainly relate here in CT.

Thanks for answering this post. I wish more DUers had an appreciation of Emily Dickinson!
