15. Living near St Louis
During the floods along the Mississippi River...1992 (or was it 1993??) anyway I grew up with a dog as a pet, my wife never had a pet but wanted one so we decided to get a pet.

Given the time and place we figured we could turn our selfish want to some action of good...rescuing a 'flood dog' - the many dogs left behind by flooded out people.

We went to a shelter and I walked in and saw this beautiful black lab with a fresh litter of pups (they old enough to take home but just barley, they had been born at the shelter).

Meanwhile my wife had wandered inside and saw a dirty mess of a mut (4 to 6 months old) inside one of the cages. He'd been left a couple weeks back tied up at the shelter's fence with no note or anything.

I found her inside and said something like, "Found the perfect thing come look at these black lab pups."

yadda, yadda, yadda

Nathan has been with us (through 2 cross country moves) ever since.

And he's not black, not a Lab and it took about a month to get him clean.
