Small enough to still have a town square and beautiful old homes but large enough to have more than one stop light. Memphis is about 75 miles away and that's your closest airport. Tupelo is about an hour away and the shopping's not too bad there.
The people are gracious and used to newcomers, since the university population (11,000 when I was there) outnumbered the residents.
A few good restaurants, a wonderful bookstore (Square Books, on the square) and higher than average incomes and education for a southern city of comparable size. The university influences everything about the town. There are concerts and plays at the university and the Memphis Symphony and others have run-out concerts there occasionally. Memphis is close enough to go for an evening event, too.
I would seriously consider going back if I had a chance.
