13. I bought a gnome in England and it ended up in my carry-on
because we had to lighten the checked luggage. Traveling from Heathrow to Geneva, a bunch of English security officers gathered at the X-ray screen and then started laughing. Leaving Frankfurt for home, I got pulled aside into a little room where the gnome was swabbed for explosives. I was very nervous for a few minutes since I realized that the gnome could have picked up some nitrates from sitting next to sacks of fertilizer at the garden center. It all turned out OK, and the gnome is sitting on the porch now.
