We had two trees removed from our property today. They were old elm trees. Since we are surrounded by cornfields on three sides, they were not exposed previously to the elm disease that ravaged most of the trees in the country.

However, they have been dying slowly over the last two years. One was a massive tree. When three adults hugged its trunk, our fingertips barely touched. The other was a smaller elm. Its trunk bent about halfway up to catch the light, because it was so close to the bigger tree.

I think the big tree must have been about 150 years old.

We still have two very old trees closer to the house. They are maples. I think they were planted about 1910, the same time the house was built.

We will plant a couple of oak trees in the spring. But it is so strange and bare back by the old machine shed. It will never look the same. Goodbye, old trees.
