Walk out of your hotel, take a cab and tell him "Perry's on Union Street" (if you want to drink with rich yuppies) or to take you to the Haight (heavy punk drug scene). There are good clubs SoMa ("South of Market").

As a jazz lover, I used to love to go to the Great American Music Hall on O'Farrell.

If you want Old San Francisco, I'd say try Enrico's on Broadway. Sandwiched between strip clubs, it's the best sidewalk cafe in SF, and GREAT short-order Italian food.

Pity Henry Afrika's closed in the late 1980s.

Best Irish bar in SF: "Plough & Stars" on Clement. Don't even THINK about saying anything sympathetic to the Protties.

Is the Fog City Diner on the Embarcadero still there?
