It's just an attempt to acknowledge that the male is going through something with his wife, as opposed to the old idea that the woman was the only one responsible for the kids. It's better than "The old bitty is pregnant so I'm getting smashed at the bar and hoping to have an affair."

Sounds funny to me, too, but who cares? It's just another sign of people trying to live their own lives on their own terms while escaping the outdated systems of the past, and creating language to fit their realities where no language has fit before. It's sweet, it's a sign of progress, and it's something liberals who believe in egalitarianism and equality should understand, if not applaud.

My opinion, anyway. :)
