Mostly because he was pretty ass ugly himself, and liable to love anyone with a pulse.
I used to have a friend named Shon, he was fond of recreationally loving ugly people... especially if they'd give him a place to sleep for the night. Sometimes he'd just do it to keep in practice, I think.

Love's really just a little harder for ugly people, if you think about it. Like paying for college if you're poor. Or getting a job if you have no connections.
And hell, if all else fails, there're always hookers/"escorts"...
