So turn the shock back on your mother. It's important for her to know that you are your own person. If she wants to get mad at you simply for being a Democrat, you need to distance yourself from that kind of totalitarian thinking, unfortunately. It's abusive. She's not recognizing you as an adult.

When Gingrich started the culture wars, this is precisely the kind of conflict he envisioned: elders hectoring youth, and youth ultimately bending because of natural deference.
