Ysleta Kranz, 82, of Poway tried her luck at the $1 slots at Valley View Casino.

In the 1971 movie “Dirty Harry,” Clint Eastwood talked about the number of bullets left in his .44-caliber magnum. But his classic line applies equally to slot-machine players:

“You've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?”

If you feel lucky, go ahead and play that machine. But don't think that skill, knowledge or experience – so valuable in poker, blackjack and other casino games – is much of an advantage when playing what used to be called the one-armed bandit.

“When you sit down at a slot machine, you are counting on luck, pure luck and nothing more,” said Steven Penhall, general manager of East County's Sycuan Casino.

There is one bit of knowledge that could make a difference: knowing the “payout” of a specific machine.

But good luck trying to find that out.
