When they wrote the constitution they made sure that the bill of rights included the right to bear, so that if a repressive government or a tyranny happened again, the people could once again rebel.

I'm not acquainted with the weapons back in that day, but the british had single shot rifles with smoke producing gun powder
and so did the colonists.

The four fathers had wanted the people to always have the ability to rebel violently if need to, to a repressive government. And if they were here today, I believe they too would make it legal to have citizens own the same type of guns and weaponry that the military has.

But that's speculative, and that's just the four father's personal opinion. I see a need to own guns in the world today, but hopefully one day, weapons will not be needed.
