By that logic nobody anywhere would be allowed to have firearms at work. Hell even security guard, and armored car drivers could shoot a bystander or misuse their gun.
Given the extremely low rate that CCW use their firearms the cost for a $10 million liability insurance limited to CCW carrying at work would be neglible and would protect the company in the extremely unlikely scenario that they were sued. So the company chose not to for the same reasons company chose a lot of stupid crap. $$$$.
By firing that employee the store is trying to avoid ruinous lawsuits by distancing themselves from gun use. Someone would still sue even if it is the company has a no gun at work policy. The policy is feel good, do nothing.
