Why do Republicans feel the need to defend the Bush victory?

For months we have heard from Republicans on and on that the Democrats election challenge was frivilous and groudless. Yet they are up there today one after another defending the validity of the Bush victory in Ohio. Why is this? If Bush legitimately won Ohio they should not feel the need to contest the assertions of the challengers.
