In the letter dated Wednesday, California Reps. Anna Eshoo and Ellen Tauscher called Roemer "the candidate we trust" for the DNC chairmanship and warned activists not to discount him because of his views on abortion.
"As chair of the DNC, he will not set policy nor will he propose altering the Democratic Party platform on this issue," Eshoo and Tauscher wrote. "We know Tim as a Catholic who has deep personal convictions on the issue of abortion."
Eshoo and Tauscher said they were endorsing Roemer because of his policies on national security and his interest in strengthening the state parties. And, they wrote, his election would demonstrate that the Democratic Party is truly committed to a diversity of views on critical issues.
"His election would prove that we are an inclusive party that welcomes those who agree with our bedrock Democratic ideals, but may hold differing positions on issues across a number of policy areas," they wrote."
