What I saw at the parade:
Advertisements [?]
A disembodied white hand, wearing a white French cuff and cufflink, waving through the darkened bulletproof glass of an armored Cadillac DTS limo.
Dan Rather "assumes" it's President Bush.
He tells me how heavily armored this special vehicle is and that it has "a bomb resistant floor".
The car stops and the doors open.
Figures emerge.
It IS the president and the first lady.
The limo has made it safely through the demonstrator section and they will now walk several steps along the route.
They stay between two of the armored cars, one in front and one behind.
On both sides they are buttressed by secret service agents.
At least two are black, a nice Rovian touch.
The Bush's do not venture out of the protective box.
Mrs. Bush is all in white with white gloves.
She has the beauty queen hand waggle down pat.
The car stops after about a block and the first couple disappears inside again.
Dan Rather gushes over this singular accomplishment.
They have done it. Actually emerged from the cocoon for a few minutes and then safely returned.
A grateful nation sighs with relief.
