These all appear in my local paper tomorow...

1. Were Essays Example Of Double Standard?

Editor, Times-Dispatch: Regarding the article, "At Berry Hill, Taking a Look Into the Past":

Could you imagine the outrage that would be raised if a group of white students wrote essays entitled, "What It Means to Be European-American," and recited them in public? Those responsible would be required to attend sensitivity classes.

But since it's a bunch of blacks, they are publicly praised for it. Could someone please explain why this double standard is tolerated? Timothy Hatley. chase city.

2. Let's Look At Democrats, Too

Editor, Times-Dispatch: Regarding Juanita White's letter: The present administration is "deceitful, manipulative, and in control of the media"?

Well, try this on for some Democratic administrations. FDR tried to pack the Supreme Court when its decisions didn't suit him, and sought revenge against Charles Lindbergh and the America First group when they opposed our going into World War II. He was so jealous of Lindbergh's popularity that he even forbade him from flying combat missions against the Japanese. He was so anxious to satisfy the Great Lobby, which put him into power, that he violated the Neutrality Act of Congress to get us into the European war theater. As a result, 10,000 Americans perished in the Bataan Death March for his lack of interest in the war in Asia.

Wasn't John Kennedy protected by the press in some of his dalliances with mob-connected women? Can anyone imagine the liberal squawking if Bush were to appoint his brother Attorney General? And LBJ probably abused power more than any other. Does the liberal protest about weapons of mass destruction sound anything like Johnson's Gulf of Tonkin episode?

And what can we say about Bill Clinton -- the most morally bankrupt President -- convicted of perjury in a federal court, who, in addition, issued 500 questionable pardons? Woodrow Wilson pushed us into World War I, probably the dumbest war of all, with 320,000 U.S. casualties.

The death toll of our troops under Democratic Presidents (excluding Wilson in WWI): 405,000 (World War II), 54,000 (Korea), and 56,000 (Vietnam).

In Iraq and Afghanistan we have lost about 2,000 troops. I don't know if I agree totally with the Iraq war, but Congress approved it, and after 9/11, I am not sure what else we could have done. I believe Bush is a decent man trying to do the best he can under very unusual circumstances. Carping about him and his administration only gives aid and comfort to a most unusual and dedicated enemy. Hugh Campbell. beaverdam.

3. And Drowning Proved Witch-Trial Innocence
Editor, Times-Dispatch: The results of the Terri Schiavo autopsy were gleefully announced as if they were a vindication for her euthanasia. Ellen Goodman goes so far as to use the "facts" to hammer the Bush administration for not being a disciple of the global-warming theory <"That's My Opinion; Don't Confuse Me With the Facts">.

If the only sure way of knowing Ms. Schiavo's condition was an autopsy, then what makes this any different from executing a suspected criminal first, then looking at the evidence to see if he was guilty? James E. Stansbury. waverly.

4. Koran Comes First, After Killing Infidels
Editor, Times-Dispatch: After reading the Op/Ed column by Kenneth Woodward concerning claims of Koran abuse at the U.S. detention center at Guantanamo Bay <"Muslims Take Their Religion Very, Very Seriously">, I was left wondering how many Korans have been desecrated by suicide bombers blowing themselves up in Iraqi mosques, along with their fellow believers and the "living word of God." Scott Michaelis. midlothian.
