19. We need to "move on" from 2000
Gore kept fighting for as long as there was a chance of changing the outcome.

He only stopped fighting when there was no chance of changing the outcome.

Al Gore strongly disagreed with the Supreme Court's decision, but he accepted it.

Instead of "going down fighting", using up all his political credibility and allowing himself to be painted as a "sore loserman" - he has lived to fight another day.

There would be no point in Gore trying to encourage Senators to start up a debate when it was clear that Senate Dems were not prepared to go down to the wire.

The Democratic leadership in Congress had decided that the 2000 election was over, that they would let Bush be inaugurated, and then try harder in 2004.

The pressure on Gore to quit was already strong before the SCOTUS decision. If he had tried to continue fighting it would have been an act of political suicide.

What we know for sure is that when it comes to November 2008, most voters are not going to base their decision based on what we wish had happened in November 2000.

We have to give people good reasons to vote for our candidates, and at the same time do everything we can to ensure a clean, fair and accurate election.
