MIAMI — To thundering applause from a packed house, Democratic icon Bill Clinton told supporters Saturday that putting Tampa congressman Jim Davis in the Governor's Mansion was within their grasp.

While Davis embraced Clinton, Crist remained noncommittal about Monday afternoon's scheduled visit by President Bush to Pensacola. Bush is to rally voters in the Panhandle, a GOP stronghold, but the campaign was nervous about alienating moderate Republicans and independents in the rest of the state so close to the election, one adviser said privately.

Crist, though, denied he's avoiding the president. George LeMieux, the campaign chief of staff, said a decision on whether to campaign with Bush will be based on the needs of the campaign that day. "We will be in the best places we need to be to win," LeMieux said.

And good-time Charlie knows that it ain't with * in Pensacola tomorrow.
