Go Ahead, Tell The Guy ...

By Nancy Greggs

Good God, I never thought I’d live to say this, but my most fervent prayer right now is that you Republican powers-that-be just keep talking.

No, honestly, I really want you to just keep gabbing away, every chance you get, to the American voters – because when you talk to the average American guy these days, he’s all ears. So please, keep tellin’ it like it is – or the way you want him to believe it is, the truth notwithstanding.

Tell the guy – the one who lost his job when the plant he’d worked at for twenty years moved to Mexico – that outsourcing isn’t hurting the middle-class worker … go ahead, he’ll believe you.

Tell the guy – the one who just came back from Iraq in a wheelchair and can’t get the rehab or disability payments he was promised – that you’re the “Support the Troops” party … go ahead, he’ll believe you.

Tell the guy – the one who got the $300 tax rebate while the billionaire CEO of the company he works for got a permanent tax-cut that will save him from paying his fair share – that you’re all for giving every citizen a fair shake … go ahead, he’ll believe you.

Tell the guy – the one who read all the news stories about Foley, Vitter, Cunningham, and Abramoff – that you’re the people who represent solid moral values … go ahead, he’ll believe you.

Tell the guy – the one who’s paying through the nose at the pump and at the drug store – that you’re looking out for the average Joe and not Big Oil and Big Pharma … go ahead, he’ll believe you.

Tell the guy – the one who just declared bankruptcy because he couldn’t pay his medical bills – that universal health care is a terrible idea that just won’t work… go ahead, he’ll believe you.

Tell the guy – the one who’s watching the national debt skyrocket with every passing day – that the Republicans are the party of fiscal responsibility … go ahead, he’ll believe you.

Tell the guy – the one who’s now working two jobs just to make ends meet – that you’ve created a booming economy that benefits all Americans … go ahead, he’ll believe you.

Tell the guy – the one whose kid is going to school in a dilapidated building full of over-crowded classrooms and out-of-date textbooks – that No Child Left Behind has been a huge success … go ahead, he’ll believe you.

Tell the guy – the one who’s wondering if his mail is being read, his phone-calls are being listened to – that you’re the party of less-intrusive government … go ahead, he’ll believe you.

Tell the guy – the one who has to take his shoes off at the airport before he can board a plane full of uninspected cargo – that you’re keeping America safe … go ahead, he’ll believe you.

Tell the guy – the one who remembers the Clinton surplus – that it’s the Democrats who just spend, spend, spend, and can’t be trusted with the country’s purse-strings … go ahead, he’ll believe you.

Tell the guy – the one who’s seeing the violence, chaos and carnage in Iraq increasing every day – that victory is just around another one of those corners to be turned … go ahead, he’ll believe you.

Tell the guy – the one who can’t help but notice that no one in this administration, from the president on down, can answer a simple question without obfuscating, stalling, contradicting themselves, or hiding behind executive privilege – that you’ve brought honesty and dignity back to the White House … go ahead, he’ll believe you.

No, really, keep talking. You’ve proven your honesty and integrity, your commitment to hard-working Americans, your economy-building expertise, your beyond-reproach Christian principles, your keen judgment in war-planning and execution, your international diplomacy skills, and your personal moral rectitude above and beyond the expectations of those you once duped into supporting your party and voting your sorry asses into office.

I’m sure they all still believe in you, and everything you say. Well, some of them still do – a few of them – a handful of them … a bunch of them whose numbers get smaller every day.

But by all means, keep talking. With any luck, you can get that number down to zero before November 2008.
