I think Ron Paul puts across this image to a lot of Republicans as a snake oil salesmen. On one hand he's outspoken on the war and on the other hand they aren't certain as what else he has in his bag.
Kucinich to them like Kennedy has an air of weirdness but different than what you got from, say, Ross Perot. It's more of a surface weirdness whereas people know what to expect from the guy and will say what is on his mind.
Much different than the atypical polished candidate that speaks in generalities and you can't tack anything in the past or present to what he's saying now. Reagan had that oddballish nature to them as well.
It's a strange phenoma but I guess taken as whole makes sense when you look at the big picture. The candidates in the Democratic field seem like the snakey Dems their grandparents warned them out. I think it's an air of falseness that's urban legend amongst candidates running slightly to the left.
In other words, "You make big promises but unlikely to keep them. I'll vote for the guy that's gonna stab me in the front."
On the news Kucinich's stories tend to back what he's saying. That goes a long way with a lot of people.
