Ok, explain it to me...dummy style

I realize that some would call me a "bad Democrat" for not knowing. I see it as me being a political "virgin", and never really paying attention to the primary process. Exactly how does the convention work. Assuming we go all the way without knowing our nominee, how exactly will that be decided. Who goes to the convention, and who decides the nominee.

Please be kind, I am trying to educate myself.
