...so, basically it's the Hillary/McCain Democrats that are railroading us. Statistically, I can't figure out anyway around it.

But remember, she's still technically in the race, and they KNOW that polls are important to keep her campaign afloat. Is it likely that they'll change their minds if/once she's bowed graciously, and reality dawns that their choice for President is either McCain (R) or Obama (D)?
